We are introduced to Ekaterina Zhuvova aka Katya, a witch who can read people well and have visions, and Nigel Ferris, a Seattle cop. She ends up part of a Russian prostitution ring but servicing men on her back or her knees is better than being dead.
Katya is trying to escape this nightmare along with the other women who are imprisoned in their own hell. The story works though because it is filled with non-stop action and a roller coaster emotional ride. But Katya has another secret as well, one that could very well get her killed. It was believable and fit perfectly within the plot. Creating traffic difficulties and deaths, the danger surrounds the area, creating hazards and casualties at every turn.
Under 100 pages, I was taken on an emotional rollercoaster ride that had me clutching my chest. Nigel is an undercover cop trying to bust the prostitution ring. Katya has been dreaming of literally the end of the world — fires, floods, earthquakes. Book 2, Lure of the Wicked was just released on June 28th! Very surprised how this book turned out. It appears to be coming from the very brothel where he had just left Katya.
It shows the readers, through the eyes of our heroes Katya and Nigel, the massive cataclysmic natural disaster that changes the physical world as well as the religious world. She is prostitute who is looking to escape and find freedom for the other women. In America, they didn't care about witches. We see the world become dominated by an oppressive theocracy determined to wipe out witchcraft forever, a world we will see in her series. There was a certain amount of inheritant conflict for the cop - duty vs desire -as he should be looking at the greater good in taking down the ring, instead of letting his attraction to Katya risk the op he's spent months on. Katya has a little bit of premonition and some consider her a witch.
The story line was a good one creating high hopes from the beginning. The things that worked for me: I thought that both of the leads were interesting, and the setup for the relationship as well. With no one left toturn to, Katya hatches a desperate escape plan. Not the fault of the author, of course, but … hope the covers get better, Avon Impulse. One part glamour, one part dork and all imagination, After writing happily ever afters for all of her friends in school, Karina Cooper eventually grew up sort of , went to work in the real world kind of , where she decided that making stuff up was way more fun true! The two make a fast connection.
But all that was about to change. She is a victim of human trafficking. Would not recommend this book I decided to check out a piece of this author's work after I met her at a Steampunk festival, and I'm really, really glad I did. Surrounded by deathand fear, shattered by immeasurable loss, they have only a bond forged in fire to cling to as they struggleto survive in a world gone straight to hell. All opinions are my own based off my reading and understanding of the material. Most of the other women go their separate ways but Katya returns with Nigel to the police station.
I will definitely be getting more of her books! Before the Witches begins with Detective Nigel Ferris. The Characters are very strong and exciting. Check out Katie's review of Blood of the Wicked here. The book was not about vampires, I was told, but about witches. Fast forward a few pages and the earthquakes are ravaging Seattle. As a sales tool, this works well- I hadn't heard too much about this book or series but upon sampling the writing, characters, and premise, I was interested in finding out more. Nigel rushes back to the whorehouse just in time to rescue Katya and her friends.
Finally getting agreement, he heads out to find further clues when he is directed to an area of disaster.
